If it is fresh or healing

Sits flatter than the inner conch, so a flat-back stud lies well against the ear. A common anchor point in a curated stack.

The anatomy

The outer conch sits on the flatter shelf of the same bowl, further from the canal and just below the helix rim. Being flatter, a flat-back stud lies properly against the ear here rather than tilting, which is why it is such a dependable anchor in a curated stack.

It takes the same gauge and much the same healing time as the inner conch. The difference is presentation: an outer conch reads as part of the ear's outer line, while an inner conch reads as something set into the bowl.

Aftercare

Same as the inner conch — sleep is the hard part, everything else is straightforward.
