If it is fresh or healing

Swells more than people expect. Start at 8mm and downsize to 6mm once swelling settles — a post that is too short while healing causes embedding.

The anatomy

The helix is the outer rim that curves round the top of the ear — the most common cartilage piercing and the one most curated ears are built around. There is room along it for several, which is why it usually ends up as more than one.

It swells more than people expect. The rim is exposed, gets knocked constantly, and cartilage has a poor blood supply, so it reacts and then takes its time. Start on an 8mm post to leave room for that swelling, then downsize to 6mm once it settles — a post that is too short while swollen is what causes embedding.

Aftercare

Sleep is the main battle, and hair is second — a brush caught on a fresh helix sets it back weeks.

Book the downsize rather than doing it yourself, and do not book it early.
